Watch the method

Two $4 cm$ by $3 cm$ rectangles share a $3 cm$ edge. Draw the merge. The inner $3 cm$ + $3 cm$ sits inside, so cancel both copies. Perimeter = $2 (4 + 3) + 2 (4 + 3) - 2 \times 3$ = $22 cm$ .

Cancel the shared edge.

A $5 cm$ by $4 cm$ rectangle and a $3 cm$ by $4 cm$ rectangle share the $4 cm$ edge.
