Watch the method

A square of side $12 cm$ . Mark the four midpoints and join them to make a diamond. The four corner triangles make the other half of the square, so the diamond from the midpoints is half the square: $\frac{1}{2} \times 12 \times 12$ = $72 cm^{2}$ . Shaded is the region between the square and the diamond, so shaded = $144 - 72$ = $72 cm^{2}$ .
